Public Assistance

Applying for public assistance (also called Temporary Assistance, Family Assistance, or Safety Net Assistance) is not always as easy as it should be. If you need help with your application, you can come to Strycker’s Bay during our walk-in hours (Monday - Wednesday from 9 - 10:30 a.m.) for assistance and guidance.

You can also use the Public Benefits Manual (PDF) prepared by Neighborhood Legal Services of Buffalo, NY or Applying for Public Assistance at a Job Center (PDF), a 19-page manual (available in English and Spanish) describing the application process for welfare. The manual was prepared by the Legal Aid Society’s Public Benefits Education Project. There are six other helpful manuals available on this website including How to Win Your Fair Hearing (also in English and Spanish) and Moving From Welfare to Work (both PDF documents).

Food Stamps

Many individuals and families can benefit from food stamps. According to Community Food Resource Center’s December 18, 2002 report, entitled "Missing Millions/Missing Meals: New York City’s Food Stamp Crisis," more than 800,000 New York City residents who are potentially eligible for food stamps do not receive them. Food stamps help seniors, the disabled, unemployed, the poor, and those who work make ends meet. If you would like more information on applying for food stamps, come to the Strycker’s Bay office during our walk-in hours or contact NYC’s Human Resources Administration’s Infoline at 877-HRA-8411 for application information.
